Joey Jones, born on July 21, 1986, in Dalton, Georgia, United States, is the son of Joseph Edgar Jones and Joyce Marie Jones. His father was a brick mason, while his mom was a stay-at-home wife. He had a sister, Marsha Jones Dalton, who was adopted when she was seven but to whom he is nonetheless very close.

Joey Jones attended Southeast Whitfield High School in Dalton, where he played football and ran track and field. He did well in school and was the first in his family to graduate high school and attend college in 2004. He attended Dalton State College, taking classes intermittently for a few semesters. Afterward, he got a job as a forklift driver; however, after being disillusioned by the life that awaited him, he decided to enroll in the Marines.

After enlisting, Jones traveled to Parris Island in South Carolina, where he underwent basic training. After basic training, he served for eight years in the United States Marine Corps. He worked as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician (bomb technician), where he was tasked with helping to disarm and destroy IEDs (improvised explosive devices).
